WASHINGTON, D.C. – Senator Thom Tillis recently co-sponsored the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) Actlegislation requiring individuals to provide proof of U.S. citizenship in order to register to vote in federal elections.

“This commonsense legislation builds confidence in our election system by ensuringthat voting in our elections is reserved solely for American citizens,” said Senator Tillis. “As millions of illegal immigrants enter our country because of President Biden’s failed border policies, it is crucial we safeguard our democratic process by ensuring only American citizens can register and vote in our elections.”

In addition to the SAVE Act, Senator Tillis is a cosponsor of the Prevent Foreign Citizens from Voting Act which would prohibit federal funds from going to any state or local government that allows foreign citizens to vote in any federal, state, or local election.

Background:

Specifically, the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility Act:

  • Requires states to obtain documentary proof of U.S. citizenship when registering individuals to vote in federal elections
  • Requires states to remove non-citizens from their official lists of eligible voters.
  • Establishes criminal penalties for registering an applicant to vote in a federal election who fails to present documentation proving U.S. citizenship.
  • Mandates the Election Assistance Commission adopt and transmit guidance for implementing the bill’s requirements to state election officials.
