WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, U.S. Senator Thom Tillis (R-NC) filed nearly 300 amendments in response to the budget resolution proposed by Congressional Democrats that could offer amnesty to more than 8 million illegal immigrants while providing no funding to secure the border or prevent future illegal immigration.

“With the crisis at the border causing a surge in human trafficking and the smuggling of illegal drugs, Democrats are responding by pushing massive amnesty that will only encourage more illegal immigration and make our nation less safe,” said Senator Tillis. “I am introducing a number of amendments that would secure our border, keep us safe from violent illegal immigrants, crack down on sanctuary cities, and promote smart and legal immigration reform. This is only one of the many reckless and dangerous proposals in the Democrats’ partisan $3.5 trillion tax and spending spree, and I will do everything I can to ensure it does not become law.”

The amendments filed by Senator Tillis would in part:

  • Significantly increase investments in physical infrastructure, border enforcement technology, and technology at ports of entry.
  • Significantly increase hiring of border patrol agents, ICE officers, customs officers, immigration judges, and immigration prosecutors
  • Provide for expedited removal of violent felons, sex criminals, gang members, drug traffickers, and human traffickers
  • Prevent fraud and abuse by illegal immigrants trying to use public benefits including health care, housing, unemployment, and Social Security
  • Cracks down on sanctuary city policies, provide a private right of action to victims of sanctuary city policies, and provide authority to state and local law enforcement to enforce immigration law
  • Reform our broken asylum system to prevent fraud and abuse
  • Reign in executive overreach on immigration, put up guardrails to prevent executive amnesty for illegal immigrants
  • Reform our legal immigration system by encouraging merit-based immigration
  • Crack down on those who overstay their visa, and expedite removal of those who do
  • Prevent visa fraud and abuse
  • Provide DHS and other agencies authority and resources to collect data on those seeking to immigrate, provide for background checks, and strengthen enforcement of our immigration laws
  • Create criminal penalties for those who prevent enforcement of our immigration laws
  • Strengthen our ability to detain dangerous criminal aliens
  • Crack down on employment fraud and abuse of immigrant labor programs and visas
  • Prohibit those convicted of drug crimes, DUI’s, violent crimes, and sex crimes from becoming eligible for provisional status
  • Strengthen immigration law to protect against entry of terrorists, human traffickers, and other criminals
  • Support victims of crimes by criminal aliens, including restoring VOICE office
  • Improve integrity of student visa programs
