WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, U.S. Senators Thom Tillis (R-NC) and Chris Coons (D-DE), Co-Chairs of the Senate Human Rights Caucus, released a joint statement urging the Burmese government to stop attacks on peaceful demonstrators and journalists.
“As Co-Chairs of the Senate Human Rights Caucus, we urge the Burmese authorities to immediately cease attacks on peaceful demonstrators and journalists,” said Senators Tillis and Coons. “It is imperative for Burmese law enforcement and military personnel to respect the fundamental human rights of all Burmese citizens to peacefully gather and protest, and it is crucial for state security forces to exercise restraint and refrain from using excessive force against their own citizens. We also urge the prompt release of Associated Press journalist Thein Zaw and five other members of the independent press who were arbitrarily detained last month.”
