WASHINGTON, D.C. — Senator Thom Tillis (R-NC) has co-sponsored the Walter Scott Notification Act, legislation introduced by Senator Tim Scott (R-SC) that would require states receiving federal law enforcement funding to report a number of details surrounding officer-related shootings.

“The murder of George Floyd was a tragedy that should have never occurred and it is past time to take a comprehensive look at the data surrounding officer-related use of force, including a weapon being discharged,” said Senator Tillis. “I am proud to join Senator Scott in support of this legislation and will continue to work to find solutions so we can increase transparency, promote accountability, and ensure justice for all.”

Under the proposed legislation, states would be required to keep track of a number of data points, including demographic information, a description of the event, and the overall circumstances that led up to the weapon being discharged. A state that fails to comply with the prescribed requirements could be subject to a ten percent reduction in federal grant funds.
