WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Senators Thom Tillis (R-NC) and Bob Casey (D-PA) recently sent two bipartisan letters to Congressional appropriators urging them to protect seniors during the COVID-19 pandemic. The letters pushed for additional funding to support senior legal services and public awareness campaigns to educate seniors about fraud and scams.
The first letter sent by Senators Tillis and Casey was sent to Senate Committee on Appropriations Chairman Richard Shelby (R-AL) and Ranking Member Patrick Leahy (D-VT) and Labor, Health, Human Services, Education, and Relation Agencies Subcommittee Chairman Roy Blunt (R-MO) and Ranking Member Patty Murray (D-WA) urging them to provide the Administration for Community Living at the Department of Health and Human Services with $20 million to support senior legal service providers.
“These funds will help ensure seniors have access to legal services, including hotlines, to meet their civil legal needs during the pandemic and in its aftermath,” wrote the Senators.
The second letter sent by Senators Tillis and Casey was sent to Senate Committee on Appropriations Chairman Richard Shelby (R-AL) and Ranking Member Patrick Leahy (D-VT) and Financial Services and General Government Subcommittee Chairman John Kennedy (R-LA) and Ranking Member Chris Coons (D-DE) urging them to provide the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) with an additional $25 million to develop public awareness campaigns to educate seniors about frauds and scams.
“This additional investment is critical in the fight to protect seniors against sophisticated criminals and scam artists leveraging the global pandemic for personal gain,” wrote the Senators.
