WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Senators Richard Burr (R-NC) and Thom Tillis (R-NC) introduced legislation to honor the legacy of the late Congressman Walter B. Jones, Jr. (NC-03) by renaming the U.S. Postal Service located at 3703 North Main Street in Farmville, N.C. as the “Walter B. Jones, Jr. Post Office.”

“As we commemorate Walter’s passing one year ago today, we reflect on the lasting impact he had on North Carolina and this country,” said Senator Burr. “Walter was a dedicated public servant who practiced a steadfast commitment to his principles. I can think of no better way to recognize his legacy than by dedicating the Walter B. Jones Jr. Post Office in his hometown. It’s a privilege to introduce this legislation, and I look forward to the Senate’s passage.”

“Walter Jones served his Eastern North Carolina district, which he loved dearly, with honor and admiration in his 12 terms as a U.S. Congressman,” said Senator Tillis. “He will always be remembered for his tireless advocacy and had a monumental impact on all he did. One year after his passing, his legacy lives on, and I’m proud to introduce this legislation to rename the Farmville Post Office after such a respected American servant.” 

Senators Burr and Tillis also sent a letter of support to the Senate Committee on Homeland Security and Government Affairs recognizing the late Congressman and urging the Committee’s swift passage of this legislation.

Congressman Greg Murphy (NC-03), who succeeded Congressman Jones’ seat after his passing, introduced companion legislation in the House of Representatives. This legislation unanimously passed the House on February 5, 2020.
