May 24 2019

This week, U.S. Senator Thom Tillis (R-NC), a member of the Senate Armed Services Committee, voted in favor of the committee’s markup of the National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2020. The committee voted overwhelmingly, 25-2, to pass the bill, which supports $750 billion in funding national defense for fiscal year 2020. The legislation includes several key provisions championed by Senator Tillis to improve the lives of our servicemembers and military families, and makes critical improvements to North Carolina’s military installations in the wake of Hurricane Florence.

As Chairman of the Senate Armed Services Subcommittee on Personnel, Senator Tillis chaired an open hearing on the markup of the National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2020 earlier this week. On a bipartisan basis, Senator Tillis and his subcommittee colleagues passed an across the board 3.1% pay raise for our Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen and Marines. Additionally, Senator Tillis worked to secure a number of reforms in the FY20 NDAA to take meaningful steps to address the serious issues with the Military Housing Privatization Initiative (MHPI). Senator Tillis’ personnel subcommittee markup also addresses military sexual assault prevention and response, provides impact aid for local educational agencies, supports military spouse employment, and expands health care for military members and their families.

“I’m proud of the work we accomplished in the FY2020 NDAA on behalf of our servicemembers, including addressing military housing issues plaguing bases across the country, taking steps to prevent military sexual assault, and once again giving our men and women and women in uniform a pay raise,” said Senator Tillis. “This bipartisan legislation also ensures that Camp Lejeune will get more than $1 billion as it continues to recover from the devastation of Hurricane Florence and more than $2 billion total to North Carolina’s military installations as they continue to play an important role in the defense of our nation.”

The legislation now moves to the full Senate for consideration. A summary of the National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2020 is available here.

Limitation on the transfer of F-35 aircraft to the Republic of Turkey
