WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Senator Thom Tillis (R-NC) co-sponsored legislation to require the President and Congress to enact annual balanced budgets.
S.J.Res.3 is a joint resolution proposing an amendment to the Constitution requiring the President to submit, and Congress to approve, a balanced budget each year. The legislation has been referred to the Senate Judiciary Committee.
“I often ask our military leaders what keeps them up at night. Time and time again, their answer is the rapidly growing national debt and the uncertainty it brings for the future,” said Senator Tillis. “That should be evidence enough to get the $22 trillion national debt under control before it is too late, and I urge Congress to take up this balanced budget legislation to ensure we spend the American people’s hard-earned tax dollars responsibly.”
The joint resolution also includes certain spending waivers for use during wartime or imminent danger to national security.
