WASHINGTON, D.C. – This week, bipartisan legislation supported by Senator Thom Tillis (R-NC) addressing issues with the Coastal Barrier Resources maps passed the Senate and now heads to the President’s desk. The Strengthening Coastal Communities Act of 2018 makes technical corrections to the Coastal Barrier Resources maps that are adversely affecting areas along North Carolina’s southern coast.

“This legislation will partially correct a longstanding issue that has prevented many of our coastal residents from getting the federal resources they need,” said Senator Tillis. “While this legislation doesn’t fully resolve the error created when the maps were originally drawn, it is a significant improvement, and I remain committed to making sure that we fully resolve the original mapping error.”

The Coastal Barrier Resources Act (CBRA) was signed into law in 1982 and works to preserve our nation’s barrier islands by barring federal funds and financial assistance from being used there. The legislation maintains these protections for our nation’s barrier islands, while correcting portions of the map that were erroneously included in the CBRA zones. Senator Tillis previously introduced S.1745 to revise the boundaries of John H. Chafee Coastal Barrier Resources System Unit located in North Topsail Beach, North Carolina.
