Tillis: “Vice President Biden was absolutely correct: there should be no hearings, there should be no confirmation. The most pragmatic conclusion to draw in 2016 is to hold the Supreme Court vacancy until the American people’s voices have been heard.”

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Senator Thom Tillis (R-NC), a member of the Senate Judiciary Committee, took to the Senate floor yesterday to call for the American people to have a say in determining the composition of the Supreme Court.

Senator Tillis expressed his agreement with the “Biden Rule,” which refers to comments made by former Senate Judiciary Chairman Joe Biden during a 1992 floor speech in which he called for no hearings or confirmation votes in the event a Supreme Court vacancy opened up during the presidential election year.

“Vice President Biden’s remarks may have been voiced in 1992, but they are entirely applicable to 2016,” said Senator Tillis. “It is essential to the institution of the Senate and to the very health of our Republic to not launch our nation into a partisan, divisive confirmation battle during the very same time the American people are casting their ballots to elect our next President. Vice President Biden was absolutely correct: there should be no hearings, there should be no confirmation. The most pragmatic conclusion to draw is to hold the Supreme Court vacancy until the American people’s voices have been heard. ”
