WASHINGTON, D.C. – Senator Thom Tillis (R-NC) announced today he is co-sponsoring the American Liberty Restoration Act and the American Job Protection Act to lessen the negative impact President Obama’s health care law will have on American families and small businesses.
The American Liberty Restoration Act strikes the Affordable Care Act’s mandate for individuals to purchase health-care insurance or pay a financial penalty for every year they are uninsured.
Under the President’s health care law, Americans who do not purchase insurance coverage for the 2015 tax-filing season will face a financial penalty of $325 or 2 percent of their income, whichever total is greater. The penalties will increase to $695 or 2.5 percent of this year’s income for the 2016 tax-filing season.
The American Job Protection Act strikes the Affordable Care Act’s job-killing mandate for employers with 50 or more full-time employees to provide insurance that is approved by the President’s health care law or face steep financial penalties for each employee.
A recent U.S. Chamber of Commerce survey found that, in order to cope with the costs imposed by the employer mandate, roughly one-half of small businesses burdened by the mandate will be forced either to cut hours for their workers to reduce their number of full-time employees or to outright replace their full-time employees with part-time employees.
“President Obama’s health care law imposes costly mandates that burden American families, destroy jobs, and stall our nation’s long-term economic growth,” said Senator Tillis. “The commonsense legislation I am co-sponsoring will get government off the backs of hardworking families and small business owners so they have the flexibility and freedom to make their own financial and health care decisions.”
