At today’s Senate Armed Services Committee hearing, Senator Thom Tillis (R-NC) questioned Secretary of Defense Ash Carter on the Obama Administration’s inadequate response to the rise of ISIS.
“The President has repeatedly said ISIS is not gaining strength and is contained, but recent events seem to contradict that statement entirely,” said Senator Tillis. “We need to defeat ISIS, and I urge the President to develop a strategy so we can protect American citizens from future attacks.”
Yesterday, Senator Tillis and a group of Senate Republicans sent a letter to President Obama urging him to pursue additional military options to destroy ISIS abroad and protect the nation from further attacks against American citizens. The recommendations to the President include embedding U.S. military advisors with Iraqi Security Forces, the Kurdish Peshmerga, and Sunni tribal forces down to the battalion level; creating safe zones for refugees inside Syria; and pursuing a robust role for NATO in combatting ISIS and securing the safety of refugees.
